  • New year, new library reorganization. Swapped out my bigger desk for one we bought for the kids during the pandemic, and moved in my new beautiful bug rug. So happy with the space! Looking forward to reading lots of books in that chair, and exploring micro.blog at this desk!

  • Capturing Snowflakes

    Last winter we were graced

    With three days of storms.

    One after the other

    After the other.

    Each brought snow

    But different temperatures

    And so different snowflakes.

    I spent hours outside

    Bent over

    Neck crooked

    Shoulders curled

My snowflake catcher spread in the snow

    Brushing off accumulation

    Hands out of mittens

    Red and raw

In order to capture the image

With my macro lens and camera.

    Everything wet with melted flakes

One shot out of every twelve in focus

    Stiff and cold

    And exhilarated.

    I felt compelled to stay

    To watch

    To witness the flakes falling

To do justice to the beauty.

The fear of missing a flake

That fell perfectly for my camera

That avoided the melted puddles and piles

That didn’t collide with others on its path to the ground

    That formed symmetrically

That held a clear crystal at its core

    Was too much for me

    So I remained

    Crouched and cold and happy.

If Snowflake Bentley could do it,

So could I, I told myself.

My hero’s shoes are too big to fill

And I don’t pretend to have either his skill or devotion

But I appreciate the company of his presence

    His work an inspiration

When I am out there in the snow

    Capturing snowflakes

    Cold and happy.

  • Came home from a lovely Thanksgiving with a Christmas tree ( thanks to the tree farm we always go to for my parents’ tree having trees) and my new cello practice book waiting for me. Very excited about it! There is no way I’ll practice daily but it will be fun encouragement and a great book in general. 😊

  • The bright sun made pictures tricky this morning. I actually love the way this one came out- feels like I’d see it in the slide carousel of pictures from my childhood vacations- has that washed out look of a slide from the early 80s. The bright sun didn’t do much to warm the air, though. My toes were little icy cubelets by the end of my walk! #thismorningwalk #getoutside #nofilter

  • Seven Pictures of a Snail

    These days

I have a glut of photos.

I take ten in a row

    To capture one moment.

Whole sections of my photo library

    Repeated images,

    Like the flip books

    We made in grade school.

    Bands of ocean

    Of trees

    Of sunsets

    Blue

    Green

    Orange

As I scroll back through time.

    I take photos with abandon

As I  hope for one good one

    Playing with framing

    And focus

Loving the luxury of digital storage.

    Not so for my parents

Who had to dole out photos

    Like desserts

    Special

More sparing, more judicious in the click of the shutter.

    Still

We would sometimes sit in the dark

    Watching the slide shows

    of our most recent vacations

Projected life size on the wall

    And suddenly

    Slide after slide

    Of seagulls

    Of beach

    Of sunsets.

In our search for the good shot

We manage to capture the joy

    The importance of a moment.

Looking at fifteen photos of my sons in the snow

    I know I was thinking

    “This matters.”

It is our human impulse to use art

    to capture

    Our love

    Our gratitude

    Our grief.

When I look at my pictures

I can sense that swell of heart

    That accompanied the repetitions.

I may have seven pictures of a snail

    But what I also have

    Is my joy

    Made visible.

  • Easy to Love

    Cedar Waxwings

    With their striking faces

    Their glimmers of gold

    Their elusive nature

    Are easy to love.

    They swoop into my life

    Once or twice a year

    (If I’m lucky)

    Quickening my pulse and

    Causing spontaneous outbursts of joy

    To issue from my lips.

    How can one not exclaim

    And sigh

    And wiggle joyfully

    When in the presence of

    Such rare majesty?

Of course the waxwings get this treatment

    And the lady slippers

    And first snowfalls.

    I don’t think I’m alone

    In my easily won love.

    Trickier still is

    To remember the wonder

    When witnessing

    Sparrows

    And grass

And yet another snowstorm in March.

If I could toss a coin

    In a fountain

    Make a wish

    It would be for

    An equal share of wonder

    For all.

  • Tidal

At the bottom of my street
A stream flows for a hundred yards
    before joining the river.
    Eight miles later
    This river joins the sea
    Which makes my stream
    tidal
The water rising and falling multiple times a day.
    The tides bend my brain
    Trying to imagine rotating through
    the bulge of water
    Pulled by the moon
Trying to imagine the river flowing to sea
while at the same time flowing backwards to me.
What do the fish feel when the tide is high
    When the tide is low?
Is the flow different at the surface
Then it is at the bottom?
    I’ve tried to research this
But have not found satisfactory answers.
    This I know:
    The tides pull me.
I often find myself drawn to the bottom of my street
    Just to check the tide
And I declare it to myself
    With a firm inner voice,
    As though confirming
    My suspicion.
    “Slack tide.”
    “High tide.”
    “As low as it goes.”
As if this has a bearing somehow
    On my day.
As if it influences my actions,
    Alters my path.
    I think perhaps
I just like to know that I have seen it
As I like to know that I have seen the white-throated sparrow
    The katydid
    The mossy log.
To bear witness is my calling
    My sacred moments of connection
    When I can say,
“I was there, I was present, I have seen.”
Just as no man steps in the same river twice
This woman never sees the same stream twice.
    My stream in my knowing
    Is a layered composite
    Of all my streams
    All my high tides
    Low tides
    Slack tides.
    All my kingfishers
    Herons
    Beavers
    Bats.
    All my sunsets
    Snowfalls
    Moon shadows.
    Walking to my stream
    To check the tide
    Is a roll call
A way to ask the universe,
    “Who is here?”
    And a way to answer,
“I’m here, too. And I see you.”

  • You could say I’ve got a little Laura Ingalls in me. Today’s poem is about this meadow, and how it brings out my prairie longings, rooted firmly in my childhood reading. #thismorningwalk #getoutside #exploremore

    → 8:52 PM, Nov 15
  • Raised on Wilder

There is a place I frequent for my morning walks

That has a stretch of meadow

    Where the trail is thin

    Hemmed in closely by

    Brambles

    Briars

    Poison ivy

    Queen Anne’s Lace

    Milkweed

And countless others that I can’t identify (yet).

    When I walk there

A little part of me pretends

    I am Laura Ingalls Wilder

    Out alone on the

    Vast prairie

Sniffing the air for the rains

Listening for the thud of buffalo hooves

    Catching my skirts on prickers.

    I feel lively

    Bold

    Delightfully isolated

Even though when I focus on it

    I can hear traffic

    Seeping into my quiet space.

I greet each bird that swoops low over the tangles.

My boots crush grasses with each step.

I walk my way back through the years and the pages

    To the plains

    Of my childhood.

The same little girl who longed to be on the banks of Plum Creek

Still seeks trails and stream crossings

    Now as a grown-up.

I still want a sod house

A fiddle song on a snowy night

And quilts made from family history.

I know that my Wilder world is idealized

    Leaves out the pain

The uncomfortable truths of living in that time and place.

I don’t pretend it is perfect,

A place I would rather be.

But I do pretend that my meadow path

    Continues out of sight

Over the rise of the prairie

And down to the creek and the willows

    Where I can sit,

    Watching swallows dip

Watching fish rise to the surface at dusk

    Hearing the crickets,

    Deafening in their symphony

And where I spy my little house

A thin curl of smoke rising from it

At the other end of my

    Meadow trail.

  • Stonework

     At a museum once

    I saw an exhibit

About exploration in the far north

    The people built cairns

    Which gave orientation

    to a blinding, white landscape

Provided a point for the eyes to land on

And a place to leave messages for travelers

    To come

In the woods I search out old walls

    Tumbled remnants of farm life

    Boundary markers

Evidence of the difficult dance of agriculture

    In a place so rocky

    Houses made of stone

    Invite me in

    I feel protected

    Cradled

    With walls made of earth

I can let down my guard

    For all their unyielding nature

    There is something in stones

    That feels strong yet soft

    Like motherhood

    Like sweetgrass

    Like owl feathers

    Stonework holds us

    Gives us boundaries

    Connects us to the ancient

    Moves us outside of time

    Until we stand, shimmering

    Alongside the eternal

  • Convergent Evolution

    Is it convergent evolution

    When seed heads

    Are also sea lilies

    Are also feathers?

All moving on their separate pathways

To the same billowy, willowy shape

    Crafted by fluid dynamics

    Of air

    Or water

    To dance through space

    Repeated shapes and patterns

    Captivate me

    Delight me

    Spirals in snail shells

    Pinecones

    Ammonites

    Ferns

    Fractals in the forests

    Fractals in my food

    Everywhere I look

    The geometry

    Astounds me

    A million variations

    On a theme

    And on occasion

    I catch myself

    Humming the melody

    Under my breath

  • What We Pass On

    What We Pass On

We cannot choose what we pass on

    We can hope and

    We can try

    But we have no control

Will I pass on the best of me?

    Or the worst?

    A bit of both probably.

    I hope I pass on

    A mind tuned to noticing.

    I try to model

To explain why I think it’s important

But it feels like swimming against the tide

    In this age of

    Quick trick

    Instant everything

    To show how to slow.

I’m no shining example all the time

    Goodness knows

    But I do try.

Maybe that alone is a large enough goal

    To pass on the desire

    To try.

  • Heron Feet Human feet

    On early summer days

    My feet in ocean waters

    Cramp

The cold sliding along nerve endings

    So cold they burn hot.

    The soles tightening

    My toes curling

Until I must hop foot to foot

Bouncing to try to ease the pain.

    It doesn’t work

And I am forced from the water

    Feeling sheepish.

    It is June, after all.

    This is what we do-

we go to the ocean in summer to swim

But I can’t make it past my shins

    Weak human that I am.

    And now, in November

The heron that stalks the stream by my house

    Stands, hunched,

    crunched down on himself

    Preserving warmth

    on this below freezing day

    But still in the water,

    His feet still immersed

As the cold river slides past him.

Sometimes it strikes me as so peculiar

    How humans see themselves

    As better than the animals

    More than the animals

    When I feel so often

    Less

    When I feel so often

    In awe of their abilities

    Their specialties

Their secret ways of knowing the world

    Their senses more then senses

    And bodies more than bodies

    Soft flesh that I am

    And weak.

I can write poetry with words

    And so I do

Although I long to sing poetry like the birds

    Swim poetry like the whales

    Soar poetry like the butterflies.

    But

    Being human I must just

    Notice

    Observe

    Attend

To the superpowers of the world

    And record them

    In my words

As my own secret way of knowing.

  • Unpopular Opinion

    July in November

    The world feels off kilter

    I think I'm supposed to

    Rejoice but

    I can't

    My woolens lie waiting

    The trees are confusing

    Some are bare twigs

    but others,

    green plants

    The seasons do matter

    Our brains love a pattern

    The pattern seems broken

    But how long

    And why

    Will my December

    Yield full winter's splendor

    Require my mittens

    My hat pulled

    Down tight?

    I'll gladly surrender

    This warmth in November

    If I can be promised

    A cold

    Winter's night

  • Today’s isn’t spectacular, but it is the moment I wrote about from #thismorningwalk. My poem: (also found on my blog) Drawn to Light On my walk this morning I realized

how much of my time spent walking

    is simply noticing

    where the light

    lands

This is true in all seasons

    All times of day

    It seems only fair.

    After all, those photons

    have traveled miles

    and miles

    and millions of miles more

    to alight on that branch

    that leaf

    that rock

    my cheek

    It seems wondrous every time

how a beam can find a mossy log,

    illuminate it

while the rest of the forest

    is in shadow

    The photos on my phone

    attest to my wonder

    But there are worse problems

than scrolling through reams of beams of light

to find the image I seek.

We decide how to define our riches.

    My riches are not gold

    but golden

    and my counting house

    is the whole world.

  • Double Vision

    Double Vision

    I forget

    mostly

that trees are right side up and upside down

    mirror images of themselves

    branches and roots

that they take up as much space underfoot

    as overhead

    this miracle

like so many of the green variety

    stays hidden

    we are so tied

to what we can see with our own eyes

"I'll believe it when I see it"

    a sad battle cry

    that has limited our understanding

    our imaginations stunted

when it comes to the natural world

    things we can't see

    fill the universe

    keep us guessing

    keep us searching

    at least for today

    the mirror of the river

    the double suns

the dark, sculptural branches reaching upwards

    reminds me

of the dark, sculptural roots reaching down

    and I pause

    inhale in appreciation

    before moving on

    and forgetting all over again

the dew on my shoes the waters of the Lethe

    but I excuse my forgetting

for how could I ever get anything done

    if everywhere I looked

I could see the mysteries of nature

    revealed and clear

    I would be Medusa-struck still

    awe-filled and rooted

    to my own place

    So I'm grateful

    that nature reveals herself

    in pieces

    in moments

    that I can bear

  • Impervious

    November 2

    Impervious

    Scattered on my walk today
    these polka-dotted leaves
    platters of dew
    containers of light

    Most leaves were just wet.
The vegetal equivalent of a bedraggled mother
caught in the rain outside the grocery store
with two young kids in tow
    Soaked
        Limp
            Dull

    The special few
that caught and held the dew
    the light
    seemed joyous yet calm
    Can a leaf be zen?
    They were.

    What special trick
let them gather water and light
    kept their surface impervious
made what could have drenched them
    into ornamentation?

This trick I want to learn.
    How to hold myself
    That firm
    Collect what could weaken me
    and instead
    use it to glow.

Always a lesson in the meadow.

  • Morning Jewels

Fall is a delicious shiver of cold on my neck

    It's chilly ankles and fingertips

    Hands retracted into sleeves

    Sweatshirts and sweaters

    Swaddling me in

    Cozy warm

    Fall is spangled spiderwebs

    Full of dazzling dewdrops

Like diamonds burst from a velvet bag

And I wonder as I walk past

    And gasp

    How they form

Do the webs pluck the dew from the air

    One drop at a time

Like an audience filling in their seats before the show starts?

Or is it all at once

    At a magic moment

    Each orb summoned from nothing

    Appearing in an instant

I want to watch this spectacle

The making of a work of art

    But I'm always too late

So I'll just have to enjoy

    Watching the sun, caught

    Glow in each drop

    On each web

    Across this field

It still feels like a victory

And I want to award all the spiders

    Blue ribbons

    For Best In Show.

Cold air, cold hands, but all worth it! #olloclipmacro #snowflakephotography #snowflakes #macrophotography #nofilterneeded #snowflakebentleyismyhero

  • Snowflakes are a gift. Went outside during the storm four different times, geared up and hoping for some beauties to fall so I could capture them. The first three times the flames were all teeny fragments, but the fourth time brought some gems. I have more favorites so I’ll be sharing a second post. Hope you enjoy! #snowflakephotography #snowflakes #olloclipmacro #ilovewinter #nofilterneeded

  • Sunlight streaming through a misty forest never gets old to these eyes. 😍 It had been a few sick, wonky days without a morning walk, so I was especially grateful to be out there today. #thismorningwalk #freshairfiend #nofilterneeded #getoutside #exploremore #takeawalk #mistymorning

  • I have a new rice cooker- Xmas present. Makes terrific rice! 😁 But the best part is the name- Neuro Fuzzy. I will always remember that I got it during a Covid Christmas, because how fabulous a term for Covid brain fog is neuro fuzzy?! Is your neuro fuzzy? Why yes, my neuro is fuzzy. #thatswhatshesaid #brainfog #ricecooker

  • Finished my first book of the year, so I am starting my new reading journals! So excited to FINALLY begin my journal created by Anne Bogel. Moving the bulk of my book recording there, but keeping a reading journal on my iPad because I enjoy drawing my “bookshelves” and watching them fill in. Also loved doing some data collection last year, so I’m sticking with that, too. The video shows the pages from last year’s journal that I’m keeping in digital form. Happy reading, everyone! #readingjournal #bookjournal @annebogel @whatshouldireadnext
