  • Grateful

    Caught by my eyes
Like dewdrops on a spider web
    Were today’s beautiful jewels:

A fern curled against a backdrop of vermillion tulips
A rock wall clearly crafted with love and art
    Water droplets on a leaf
    Apple blossoms on a branch
    My mother
    My sister
    Lilacs just emerging
The grey hair and green eyes of my husband
Orioles, feasting on my crabapple blossoms
Carolina wren, singing to me and no one
    Succulent roses
A little free library, dressed in red and draped in history
My child at the stove, making me breakfast
My son’s curls, as he snuggled beneath my covers to say good morning

    An accounting of heartbeats
    A tally of love

    Many beautiful bits
    To fill my day

  • New Leaves: A Poem

    Green
    On green
    On green
    The roadsides filled
    With layers of new leaves
    Unfurling
    Varied shades and textures
    No dense foliage yet
    No thickness of cover,
    Depth of summer shade
    But
    So
    Much
    Green
    Every year I forget
    How it feels
    To go from
    Bare branches
    To green
It feels like honey, warmed in a teacup
It feels like my cat’s purr in my lap
It feels like the pages of a new book, thick in my right hand, as I begin
Driving, my eyes keep pulling to the side
    To that green
    On green
    On green

  • Spring Poem

    Garden Bed

    Mulch moves
    Green points prod upwards
    Crocus
    Daffodil
    Hyacinth

    Warm earth
    In hills and valleys
    On a miniature scale

    A promise in the air
    In the mist
    In the sun
    In the heat
    That warms my upturned cheek

  • Spring Squirming

The snow is finally gone. Our orbit and tilt have brought the Northern Hemisphere into more direct rays of sunshine, and it feels glorious. The afternoons seem to linger rather than plummet towards night. Birdsong bookends the days, stirring the morning and putting evening to rest. The red-winged blackbirds who reside behind the house by the stream seem particularly vocal, chirping and trilling their melodious notes. The juncos seem to have returned north. The crocuses are pushing upwards and blooming.
And so the season of rock tipping, dirt peering has arrived. The insect world is already active; I’ve even spied a small native bee in a crocus bud already. Today I brought my camera and went out after school to see what I could find. It was still pretty quiet under many rocks. But I found an ant with gorgeous eyes and jointed antennae, a slug whose back looks like the whorl of a fingerprint, a nearly translucent larva, and a perfect, petite snail shell spiral.
    Which do you like best?
    Enjoy!

  • Visible Invisible

A different slant of light. A covering of snow. Changes around us make the invisible visible, and the visible invisible. A blanket of white is a broad smear of eraser; low sun illuminates every twig on a branch, writ large in shadow. Today’s snowfall broadcast the beautiful pattern of light that falls daily on my pathway — a pattern I rarely see.
    Grateful.

  • Drawn to fungi

The magnetic pull of fungi…I can’t explain it. I think it is the texture, the shape, the color, the patterning. Perhaps it is respect for a living thing neither plant nor animal. Maybe it is the beauty inherent in the evidence of life cycling before my eyes. Maybe it is the touch of fairy magic they hold. Maybe it is all these things. But certainly, fungi can draw my eyes upwards or down, sending me kneeling in the mud or, as was the case this past weekend, trudging through nearly 3 feet of snow to get a better look. Here are some of my favorite fungi. I hope they delight you, too.

  • Animal spirit guides

Winter brings snow, and snow is a canvas. The landscape around us, which can seem relatively quiet, is suddenly revealed as being a flurry of activity, even in deep winter. Every footfall recorded for posterity, or until another footstep covers it, anyway. In our yard the pristine tracks are quickly eradicated, and the snow becomes a tangle of tracks. But up north, where I snowshoe, the woods are wider, the snow falls more frequently, and the tracks stick around longer. A few times now, as I’ve been walking, my path has intersected with an animal’s path, and we walked together for awhile. The first couple of times, it was a small creature whose path mirrored mine for a ways. It was like walking with a little shadow — a furry friend who stayed just out of sight. This past weekend, however, when I went to explore new trails, I found myself trudging up a pristine hill, with no tracks….and no blazes. I looked around, trying to find the trail, when I spied a line of tracks up ahead. They led through a break in the trees, and after a short while I found a blaze, and the trail. The tracks were older, filled in somewhat by new or blowing snow, and it was difficult to tell what animal made them. It could have been a deer or a fox, as the prints moved in a straight line. Based on their depth, I believe they were deer, but I like to imagine each in turn, leading the way for me. The deer is a stag, and he turns his head, twitches an ear, listens to be sure I’m following, and then walks on. The fox walks confidently forward, knowing I’d follow that beautiful bushy tail wherever it might lead.  It makes sense that the animal would use the trail; the open space makes for easy walking. But still, I find it a lovely coincidence that the tracks appeared just as I needed them.  When they continued on their way off trail a few hundred feet on I paused, looking wistfully at where they led away into the thicker woods. Then counted myself lucky for having had a companion at all, and walked on through the woods.

    Tonight
    My porch light
    Captures rare snowflake shadows.
    This dusting
    An oasis

  • Inspired View

Keegan and I managed a 26 hour weekend away, which felt much longer than it sounds. We were able to finally use a hotel gift certificate from my parents that was several years old, before it vanished into the parallel universe of unused gift certificates. The boys stayed with their Gaga, and the cat held down the fort. We got great coffee and ate delicious food and had lots and lots of uninterrupted conversations. We shopped and meandered round and round, poking in and out of little shops. Our wanderings brought me a new felt flower and epiphyte for my writing desk and a few new books from a great used bookstore. I was already excited about both books pictured below, but upon arriving home and browsing The Rarest of the Rare I realized I was doubly excited. I just noticed the “stories behind treasures at a natural history museum” part of the title when in the store, but all the objects are from the Harvard museum of Natural History — one of my absolute favorite museums. Feels destined for my bookshelf.  So now I have more books for my shelf and more happy objects to create a happy writing space. All this and lovely husband time. What a weekend!

  • Snowflake Bentley is my hero

Today I went snowshoeing up at Sunday River. They have beautiful snowshoe trails accessible from the Grand Summit hotel, and I’ve been on them a number of times now. The weather was perfect today- about 34 and light, drifting snow showers. And the snow showers were full of perfect little crystals. After waiting patiently for snowflakes to fall on me where I could see them and photograph them, I realized that the palm part of my glove was black and soft, and the flakes would stick to it if I laid it gently on the snow. Win! I felt like Snowflake Bentley when he had the breakthrough that allowed him to finally capture focused images of his beloved crystals. I used my Ollo clip and got a few good ones, but the hardest thing continues to be my ability to hold perfectly still when getting such a closeup shot. I may need to see about getting a teeny tripod. Research needed.
Enjoy these. Even the broken bits and pieces are spectacular!
